A children's illustrated picture book for early readers, commissioned by Room to Read India, Humari Kani (Our Kani) is about the 400 year old traditional weaving craft of Kani from Kashmir, India.
The book features young Nida, a young Kashmiri child who witnesses the lengthy and labour intensive process of creating a Kani shawl as she follows her mother around the Kani workshop. Right from spinning the yarn, to dyeing the threads, to preparing the heritage looms to intricately weaving the pattern of the shawl line by line, the book covers each stage of the process with vivid and whimsical illustrations.
